18 Inches of snow covering a deck and chairs

April 16-17 Winter Storm

Western into central Wisconsin was hit the hardest with one to two feet of wet, heavy snow along a north-south band.

A late-season, multi-day winter storm clobbered the western side of Wisconsin from April 16 to 17, 2023. Snow came down at rates of over an inch per hour for hours on end. Trees suffered extensive limb damage as the wet snow built up on budding branches. Lesser travelled roads became impassable during the peak of the storm, though with temperatures around freezing, roads were quick to melt once the snow ended. The storm left a band of 12 to 18 inches of snow from the La Crosse area northward to Ironwood, with multiple locations around Clark and Jackson counties and near Lake Superior receiving 20 to 24 inches of snow.
