When the British took possession of the Cape in 1795, they inherited from the Dutch East India Company a situation that was to “characterize the history of South Africa until well into the nineteenth century.”[1] This first period of British rule lasted from 1795 – 1803 and although many of the frontier farmers defied their new ruling power, the British quickly crushed any forms of rebellion by blockading the interior regions thus depriving these farmers of ammunition needed to fight. One of the most significant changes for South Africa occurred during this first period of British Occupation and this was the introduction to the Cape of a new mission-philanthropic movement that had been finding positive traction amongst the middle class of England. This movement was dedicated to “christianization and ‘civilization’ of Africa, [where missionaries envisioned] …the creation of an African middle class, which would adopt European technology and patterns of economic life, and transform African society on the model of western Europe.”[2] These missionaries also hoped that the future westernized Africa would be able to produce the raw materials needed by European factories and to also provide a market for European manufactured goods. Although this missionary movement did not imply any political rule, many of the missionaries were not directly opposed to it; in fact, many saw it as being essential.[3] These aims conflicted with many of the Cape Colony settlers who wished to continue to promote their position as dominant white elite. In 1803 the British rule came to an end and it wasn’t until 1814 when the British returned to the colony after it was formally ceded to them in the general peace treaty of 1814. Two other major events were to incise the settler farmers against the British and this was the establishment of Governor Caledon’s Ordinance of 1809 which codified regulations concerning colonial Khoi. Although these regulations strongly favored the white farmers and increased the hold the white farmers had on their Khoi workers by such provisions as forcing the Khoi to provide a permanent fixed address (i.e. on a white farm), and forbidding movement of Khoi from one location to another without permission of the magistrate, thus preventing Khoi workers from leaving one farm to look for higher paying work, there were also provisions that clearly defined the “conduct of employers towards their servants.”[4] This provision allowed the circuit courts, named Black Circuits, to look into complaints against white farmers by their non-white servants and employees. The Black Circuit caused a lot of resentment against the British by the white settler farmers because it struck at their ”white racial pride, and weakened the farmers’ authority over their servants by interposing the authority of the courts between them.[5] These impositions set up by the British, along with the influx of British immigrants in the 1820’s caused many of the white Boer settlers to depart the Cape Colony location and embark upon what was called “The Great Trek”
