Natural History

Species interactions

Habitat

Open woods and barrens are ideal habitat for this species, but populations which have host switched to crownvetch are able to occupy highways, railroad beds, and upland fields.

Population Dynamics

  • Some populations have been able to colonize more human disturbed areas due to switching to use an invasive plant as a hostplant.
  • The species tend to be rare at the edges of the range.
  • They are capable of fast, far flights but it is unknown if they tend to stay in their natal habitat, move between metapopulations, or roam freely.

Listing Status

Wild indigo duskywings are currently  listed as critically imperiled in New Hampshire , though they are globally secure. They are of more conservation concern at the southern and northwestern ends of the range.

Population Trends

We analyzed two sites for wild indigo duskywing ~2007-2017, and found no phenological shifts, but one of the sites was increasing in activity index through time.
