Currently, State Historical Highway Markers must be about a person, place, event, or institution that has statewide or national significance.

Since 2016, most newly installed State Historical Highway Markers in Virginia Beach have been funded through the Historic Preservation Commission’s research grant program, such as the Meeting of the Three Commanders marker.
