See what others can't see
Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
See What Others Cant See
Learn fundamental GIS concepts, how and where to download local community data to analyze demographics to mapping (geocoding) your customers, incidents or patients. Perform fundamental GIS operations using spatial analysis tools. On campus students use GPS and introduced to drone technology to collect new data and imagery in the field and transfer to GIS. Course is available entirely partially online if you cannot come to campus. Class is transferable to CSU and Claremont Graduate University.
When you look at the world, what do you see? Where others see chaos, we see patterns.
GIS permits us to "See What Others Can't"
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) supports public leaders in uncovering these disparities in housing, health care services, food access, education, transportation, and employment that influence equity and opportunity gaps among students.
What is GIS?
If industry needs more GIS shouldn't our students?
You engage in spatial thinking and use GIS ... you search for the fastest and perhaps safest route to campus today, you perhaps searched your value of home on Zillow . You ordered an item on Amazon (and it arrived the same day). Perhaps you neighbor called 911 and they arrived in minutes .. the call data is collected and used to show the amount of calls per council district to press support for a new fire station in locations exceeding 5 min call time. (for which reason I may add that GIS skills are marketable and used in most industries).
GIS lends itself to a deeper understanding to uncover otherwize unobtainable correlation to various variables. GIS provides a spatial understanding and problem solving skills ... such as providing access to community based data (and more) to understand and share about their communities, explore disparities and determine opportunities.
Cholera deaths in 1854 in London listed in a table .. cant see a pattern?
locations of deaths from cholera
add the water pumps ... see a correlation?
What is GIS?
Census Geographies
What are Census tracts? The Census is performed every 10 years and the 2020 is now underway ... btw they are hiring for census takers to collect information in your neighborhood!
Census in 1940. times have changed.
you jump out a plane .. the first thing you see is the United States .. as you fall, the US breaks into States ... as you fall further, CA state breaks into what?
Census Geography
Census Geography (tracts)on the left and the associated attribute table on the right
what pattern do we see? There are two layers .. census tracts and a point feature layer
Engaging (spatial) questions in using GIS
Spatial analysis allows you to solve complex location-oriented problems and better understand where and what is occurring in your world. It goes beyond mere mapping to let you study the characteristics of places and the relationships between them. Spatial analysis lends new perspectives to your decision-making and classrooms discussions involving locating, filtering and extracting the correct data to address spatial problems... much of that data is available online
- How is my community different to another community?... any why?
- Why are there more environmental issues in my area?
- How can I effectively show the need for more public transportation?
- Why is it that my neighborhood is safer than yours?
- How is it that homes in my communities are higher value that other areas? ... because of less or more tree canopy? Crime? Proximity to better schools?
- Where ..
Story Mapping with GIS
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides a spatial perspective to contribute to an intellectual and cultural understanding our students need to develop a critical and spatial consciousness of what shapes their communities by placing an emphasis on local projects connecting students to technology and their community.
A story can effect change, influence opinion, and create awareness ... and maps are an integral part of storytelling. Esri provides easy to use StoryMapping
Rio Hondo CTE has the technology and the expertise to support your access to curriculum material, modules, data and technology with minimal technical requirements. On the right are a few examples.
.... perhaps a subject in history of Los Angeles?
Capture and share (drone) imagery over historical maps to exhibit change similar to how cities are converting records into apps and virtual realities for access remotely by utility workers in the field .... or provide public interactive access to determine who is their trustee or congressperson or where is the location of the nearest voting booth or where are high crime areas in communities.
journalism? Some current new with live updates from elections to coronavirus
For example, on the right displays % with a Bachelor's degree per tract in Los Angeles County. The points are Kindergarten locations with at least 100 students ...
what was required of students to permitted to be in the classroom in the past?
The points are graduated by the number of waiver requests for each school .. why do more schools in certain areas tend to have more waiver requests?
the locations with more waivers seem to be in the same areas with locations of Trader Joes
Perhaps there is a correlation with ethnicity? GIS does not provide you the answer, you instead GIS to analyze the correlations both by simply overlay or using the many analysis and statistical tools available for you with access to an extraordinary library of layers (or add your own).
GIS provides our student marketable skills
Inaccessibility of these tools is true for many public schools, particularly low-income Communities of Color, can deny students opportunity to become sufficiently literate in these new technologies to compete in an ever-growing and rapidly advancing high-tech society. However, Rio Hondo College have better labs and other resources compared to many universities public and especially private.
GIS as a General Education Course? More campuses are exploring GIS as GE under categories of Quantitative Thinking (Rio Hondo College) or Critical Thinking (CSULB).

Online Self paced GIS Courses
There is a wealth of educator resources to obtain subject area lesson modules with data.
Rio Hondo College has an Esri Organizational licence which provides you access to accounts to work with storymaps, obtain premium data, perform analysis, generate apps and share with readers.
CTE can provide support with modules in providing access to computer lab for lessons and faculty to refine or generate new lessons articulated with your lessons and possibly your data.
Furthermore, much of these resources are available for every K-12 in the US ( Obama White House STEM Initiative 2014 ) and more recently for every K-12 outside the US ... for Free (except N Korea and few other Countries).
Esri provides hundreds of additional online self paced courses that can be accessed thru your provided login at all levels of GIS for everyone (not just administrators)
