Intro 🗣️

We're proposing changes to Parkfield Drive to improve safety and mobility for all road users.

We're focusing on Parkfield Drive from Mearns Meadow Boulevard to Payton Gin Road and around Wooldridge Elementary School.

The project is proposed in coordination with routine street maintenance, which is scheduled for Parkfield Drive during 2020 and 2021.

Goals ✅

The Austin Transportation Department (ATD)  and  Austin Public Works Department (PWD)  are proposing to improve the bicycle lanes and pedestrian crossings along Parkfield Drive and around Wooldridge Elementary School.

Our project goals are:

  • Increasing predictability and safety for all road users
  • Improving comfort and safety for people walking to school and other neighborhood destinations

This design concept is guided by:

Parkfield Drive

Located in North Austin, Parkfield Drive from Mearns Meadow Boulevard to Payton Gin Road runs through both residential and commercial areas. The street provides access to Juan Navarro High, Wooldridge Elementary, Cook Elementary, Quail Creek Neighborhood Park, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

This section of Parkfield Drive between Mearns Meadow Boulevard and Payton Gin Road has:

  • Parking generally available on both sides of the street near residences
  • Travel lanes that vary from one lane in each direction, to one lane in each direction with a center turn lane, to two lanes in each direction with a center turn lane
  • Painted bicycle lanes
  • About 7,200 - 8,600 vehicles per day on Parkfield Drive

Proposed Protected Bicycle Lanes

This project proposes to upgrade the existing painted bicycle lanes to protected bicycle lanes on Parkfield Drive between Mearns Meadow Boulevard and Payton Gin Road.

Near residences, the project is proposing parking-protected bicycle lanes on the east side of the street. Parking-protected bicycle lanes place the bike lane between the parking lane and the curb.

In the map below, the colored line is where there are proposed protected bicycle lanes.

Proposed Parking Changes

This project proposes to make street parking changes on Parkfield Drive between:

  • Mearns Meadow Boulevard and Rutland Drive
  • Quail Park Drive and Payton Gin Road

The proposed changes would remove street parking on the west curb. Street parking would remain on the east curb, however it would be next to the travel lane and the bike lane would be against the curb to create a parking-protected bike lane. An example of a similar parking-protected bike lane on San Jacinto Boulevard can be seen in the picture.

In the map below, the colored lines are where it's proposed to remove street parking on the west curb.

Proposed Lane Reconfiguration

This project proposes to reconfigure Parkfield Drive between Quail Court and Quail Park Drive from two travel lanes in each direction to one travel lane in each direction while keeping the center turn lane. This proposal includes removing the  southbound right turn lane at Parkfield Drive and Quail Park Drive.

This proposal would update traffic signal timings to maintain comparable motor vehicle travel times at these intersections:

  • Parkfield Drive/Rutland Drive
  • Parkfield Drive/Rundberg Lane

By reconfiguring the street space and updating traffic signals, this project can upgrade the painted bicycle lanes to protected bicycle lanes while maintaining comparable motor vehicle travel times.

In the map below, the colored line represents the section of the proposed lane reconfiguration. The numbered points show the locations of proposed signal timing changes. The pinpoint indicates the location of the proposed removal of the southbound right turn lane.

Proposed Pedestrian Crossing Improvements

We found eleven locations to make it easier and safer for people to walk, bike, or roll across the street. Many of these locations already have crossings and we're proposing to add  pedestrian crossing islands  or  curb extensions.
