Helena Modjeska: US Theatrical Tours

From 1877-1907, Polish actress Helena Modjeska toured the United States and Canada. This project maps 26 tours of her historic career.


Tour Eleven (1887-1888)

For her eleventh tour, Modjeska visited sixty-eight cities in twenty-one states and Ontario. The tour lasted seven months and took place primarily in the eastern half of the United States. In this time, she debuted Measure for Measure and Much Ado About Nothing.


Tour Twelve (1889)

Modjeksa's short twelfth tour took place entirely in California, where she visited ten cities.


Tour Thirteen (1889)

For her thirteenth tour, Modjeska visited seventeen western cities, nine of which she had never before visited.


Tour Fourteen (1889-1890)

Modjeska debuted four productions during her fourteenth tour--Merchant of Venice, Richelieu, Macbeth, and Fool's Revenge--while stopping in thirty-nine cities in fifteen states.


Tour Fifteen (1891-1892)

During her fifteenth tour, Modjeska spent ten months playing fifty-eight cities in nineteen states, two provinces, and Washington DC. In this time, she debuted The Tragic Mask and Countess Roudine.


Tour Sixteen (1892-1893)

Modjeska's sixteenth tour took her across the northeastern quarter of the United States and led her to debut Henry VIII, one of her extremely popular productions.


Tour Seventeen (1893-1894)

Modjeska's extensive seventeenth tour took her to sixty-seven cities in twenty-two states and Ontario. She debuted Magda on this tour.


Tour Eighteen (1895-1896)

Modjeska's eighteenth tour was contained to the American Northeast, and mainly included cities where she had before appeared. There was one novely to this tour, however; she debuted Mistress Betty.


Tour Nineteen (1897)

Modjeska's extremely short nineteenth tour took place over a few weeks in California.


Tour Twenty (1897-1898)

For her twentieth tour, Modjeska played forty cities in nineteen states. The tour lasted seven months.
