CBS The Green Secondary School Tralee has launched a program of events planned for International Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, February 11.
Led by Transition Year students, they aim to inspire a countywide conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.
International Safer Internet Day, SID is celebrated in over 140 countries. The theme for Safer Internet Day is “Together for a Better Internet”, and "Connected"

CBS the Green’s Transition Year Digital Media Students: Ronan Pearse, Joshua O' Sullivan and Swithin Pais were selected by PDST in Technology on behalf of webwise.ie to represent the voice of students in Munster and Ireland on all things relating to Internet use with a focus on safety for the user, “be wise when online”. Each academic year, webwise.ie call on students from all over Ireland to apply for a place on the SID Youth Ambassador Panel. The role of the panelist is to lead the Safer Internet Campaign at their school with the support of their teachers, and to tutor students in their school, community and Ireland on safer internet use.
CBS TY Students have been well prepared for their new Peer teaching roles having attended training as SID Youth Ambassadors Panelists. They have attended training courses hosted by webwise.ie at Microsoft HQ in Dublin. They then had the opportunity to train Post Primary students from all over Ireland at Google HQ. Tralee Garda visit our school ahead of SID to chat with our first year students on their well-being online.
First Year Students attended a talk highlighting awareness of technology with particular emphasis on our online well-being . Our schools Well being Coordinator Ms. Karen Tobin and team organised the presentation. Thanks to our speakers Sergeant Tim O Keeffe & Garda Aidan O Mahony who facilitated this session and spoke about image sharing and appropriate use of social media. Earlier in the week Sergeant Eileen O’Sullivan Community Policing came to advise our SID Youth Ambassador Panelists on discussing safety with younger students ahead of their planned activities for SID February 11 2020.

On February the 11th at 1.45PM Transition Year students will chat with Deirdre Walsh on Radio Kerry’s ‘Talkabout’ show with their Digital Media Teacher Ms. Stack. The students want to reach Parents/Guardians and other educators to encourage people to visit and access the wonderful internet safety resources and guides available. CBS The Green would like to encourage participation from families on February 11 by having discussions around Internet Safety in the home as well as at school. Ms. O' Shea we thank you for your sincere enthusiasm for the SID campaign we created. Your energy and enthusiasm and can do attitude inspires us on.... we value your support and acknowledge: without the extra work you do in our school promoting our educational activities we could not have reached such a large number of adults and young people in our community. We have achieved our remit as SID Youth Ambassadors which is to get a conversation started within our community on protecting ourselves and younger children while online. We have reached so many people through your media promotions.
Events at our school for SID
The students will deliver workshops, presentations and activities to 1st year students as part of CBS The Greens’ educational celebrations on the topic safer internet use. TY Digital Media students created a video with students from Presentation Secondary School in Tralee, Titled "What would I say to my younger self before going online. Our SID Youth Ambassadors enlisted the help of the TY Digital Media Team to create a fun interactive presentation for our younger students which will end with a quiz reinforcing the educational tips on how to care for your digital footprint and keep safe while online. The students visited two national schools, The Spa NS and St. Brendans NS, Fenit. The SID Youth Ambassadors gave a presentation using webwise.ie HTMLHEROES webpage. The younger students were given SID wristbands to wear on SID and #HTMLHEROES pictures to color and enter into the webwise.ie (link to activities for National School teachers and students) coloring competition. We wish these students success with their planned activities for SID and are proud to have inspired the students to get involved. How Teachers can get involved
webwise.ie launch a new digital media literacy short course resource called connected.
The website webwise.ie (link to webwise youth) has opportunities for competition entries for all ages, and the school recommends people visit the site and take part. Teachers can access a full lesson plan for a short course in Digital Literacy which was launched on February 11 SID. Some of CBS The Green third year CSPE students will take this course of study in February 2020.
Third Year Students complete a course in their CSPE class and create a short video on anti bullying online. "The face behind the screen"

Our TY Digital Media class selected first year student Cian Heaslip poster on the topic of caring for your digital footprint as the winner of the competition. Well done Cian, The students will upload an image of Cians poster to webwise,ie for entry to their poster competition, we wish Cian success.
