Sturgeon County Trails

Sturgeon County’s many trails offer a broad range of recreational opportunities, whether your interest is a leisurely stroll through history or simply a brisk walk through a natural setting. 


Trail Levels

Easiest - Minimal elevation change over areas of paved or hard footing. Wheelchair /Stroller Accessible.

Easy - Slight elevation change over areas of paved or hard footing surface.

Moderate - Defined elevation change over areas of paved or hard footing surface, possibly stairs.

1. Bellerose Trail

Bellerose Trail

Availability: Park gates automatically open at 5:00am, and close at 11:00pm

Parking availability: Public parking lot is available just east of Villa Drive on Bellerose Drive. 

Connections to additional trails: Pinnacle Ridge Trail continues eastward from the eastern terminus of Bellerose Park Trail 

Watch For: This trail is popular with dog walkers and includes an off-leash dog park. Please ensure your dog is leashed unless you are in the dog park. Several spots along the trail overlook the Sturgeon River floodplain, which can display a variety of colours over the course of the year. You may also see wildlife ranging from bank swallows to beavers, coyotes or even moose. 


2. Red Ribbon Trail

Red Ribbon Trail - Cardiff Park

Availability: Park gates automatically open at 5:00am, and close at 11:00pm

Parking availability: Parking is available at several places along the trail, including at the south end (near the ball diamonds) or just north of Cardiff Pond.

Bookable Shelters: Cardiff Park offers opportunities for various recreational uses including bookable day-use sheltered picnic sites, soccer fields and baseball diamonds. To book these amenities:

Connections to additional trails: The trail connects to the Cardiff Road Trail. 

Watch for: This trail is popular with dog walkers and includes an off-leash dog park. Please ensure your dog is leashed unless you are in the dog park. A large portion of the trail follows the shoreline of Cardiff Pond. Campfire pits are available near the playground, and Cardiff Golf & Country Club is just across the road.  

Historical: Following the discovery of coal here in 1895, Cardiff quickly grew into a boom town of over 1,000 residents. Over the years, Cardiff hosted eight mining operations, with the first and largest - the King Mine - being at one time the second largest coal mine in Canada. The last coal mine in Cardiff closed in 1959. Today the site includes soccer pitches, ball diamonds, playgrounds and a large open water pond which can be used for fishing and non-motorized paddle sports. 


3. Cardiff Rd Trail

Parking Availability: Street parking is available nearby.

Connections to additional trails: Cardiff Road Trail joins the Red Ribbon Trail at Cardiff Park 


4. Fort Augustus Heritage Trail

Parking availability: Parking is available halfway along the trail  

Connections to additional trails: The trail connects via roadway to the Lamoureux river walk, which passes by the historic Lamoureux  Church. Users should plan to drive from the Fort Augustus Trail to the Lamoureux Trail. These trails are part of the Athabasca Landing Trail.

Watch For: The driving route continues northwest from the historic hamlet of Lamoureux with spectacular views of the river valley. 

Historical: This unique trail follows the route of the historic  Athabasca Landing Trail  built in 1876 and often referred to as the 100 Mile Portage. The route includes interpretive signage highlighting the history and attractions related to this trail within the region. The Fort Augustus Trail and the Lamoureux Trail were formally opened in August of 2017.  



5. Lamoureux Trail

Parking availability: Available at the north end of the trail (55000 Lamoureux Drive).    

Connections to additional trails: The trail connects to the Fort Augustus Heritage Trail via roadway. Users should plan to drive from Lamoureux Trail to Fort Augustus.

Watch For: There are several cairns along the route bearing information about the area’s history 

Historical: Following the route of the historic   Athabasca Landing trail   route, Lamoureux Trail passes through the hamlet settled by Joseph and Francois Lamoureux in 1872. The brothers, originally from the Montreal area, were involved in various business ventures, including lumber and transportation. Their ferry service across the North Saskatchewan River continued to serve travelers until 1906.  


6. Namao Trail

Parking: Street parking is available nearby. 

Additional connections to additional trails: None at this time.

Historical: Home to the famous  Johnny's Store  as well as  Namao Church .

7. Pinnacle Ridge Trail

Parking availability: Street parking is available nearby. 

Connections to additional trails: The trail connects to the north end of the Bellerose Park Trail and the south end of Valley Trail 

Watch for: Changes in elevation provide panoramic views of the Sturgeon River floodplain. The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including bank swallows nesting near the water.


8. River's Gate Trail

River's Gate Trail

Parking availability: Street parking is available nearby.    

Watch For: The trail offers park-like views of the river and the Sturgeon Golf Course. 


9. Riverstone Connector Trail

Parking availability: Street parking is available nearby. 

Connections to additional trails: Connects with the Pinnacle Ridge Trail.

Watch For: You will pass impressive homes and views of the river valley.

10. Riverstone Pointe Trail

Parking availability: Street parking is available nearby.

Connections to additional trails: This trail connects to Pinnacle Ridge Trail, and Riverpointe Crescent. 

Watch For: This well groomed area is popular with dog walkers, photographers and nature lovers. 


11. Starkey Road Trail

Parking availability: Street parking is available nearby.

Connections to additional trails: This trail connects to Bellerose Trail.

Watch For: The trail parallels Starkey Road providing a safe and easy connection for residents heading to the Sturgeon Valley Park. 


12. Sturgeon Road East Trail

Parking availability: Steet parking is availble nearby.

Connections to additional trails: Additional trails continue east and south towards Edmonton Garrison.

Watch For: This trail is relatively flat, with gentle curves and plenty of open space, making it popular with cyclists and runners.


13. Valley Trail

Parking availability: Street parking is available nearby. 

Connections to additional trails: Connected to Pinnacle Ridge Trail, Riverview Crescent and Riverview Close.

Watch For: The trail passes through mature forest and park like views.


14. Valor Avenue Trail

Parking availability: Street parking is available at CFB Edmonton.

Connections to additional trails: Connected to  CFB Edmonton West Loop Trail .

Watch For: The trail offers views of the meandering Sturgeon River as it makes its way northeast to join the North Saskatchewan River. Beavers, muskrats and birds may be active nearby.  


15. Waterdale Park Trail

Parking availability: Street parking is available nearby. 

16. Woodridge Trail

Parking availability : Street parking is available nearby. 

Connections to additional trails: This developed trail segment is part of the  Athabasca Trail  &  Trans Canada Trail.  

The trail passes through mature forest and offers views of pasture lands.

Trans Canada Trail

2023 Ribbon Cutting for Underslung Pedestrian Bridge

This segment of the  Trans Canada Trail  is called the  Athabasca Landing Trail.  

Parking availability within Sturgeon County: Available at the north east end of the trail parking at 55000 Lamoureux Drive.

Historical: The  Trans Canada Trail , officially named The Great Trail between September 2016 and June 2021,is a cross-Canada system of greenways, waterways, and roadways that stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic oceans. The trail extends over 24,000 km (15,000 mi); it is now the longest recreational, multi-use trail network in the world. The idea for the trail began in 1992, shortly after the Canada 125 celebrations. Since then it has been supported by donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and all levels of government.

On July 31 2023, members of the River Valley Alliance (RVA) were joined by the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Trans Canada Trail's President & CEO Eleanor McMahon, Fort Saskatechwan Mayor Gayle Katchur & Sturgeon County Deputy Mayor Dan Deroiun to mark the official opening of the Highway 15 Underslung Pedestrian Bridge. The pedestrian bridge is a major component of the River Valley Alliance's plan of action to connect a 100-kilometre river valley trail – the longest river valley trail in North America.

FAQ's

Where can I find information about trail conditions and status?

Walking trails are open for use year round, unless major repairs or upgrades are underway. Areas under minor repair will be barricaded as required. If you have questions or concerns about trail conditions or status, please contact Ag Services. Skating and cross country status will be posted on this site.

Can I ride my horse on any of the trails?

Horses are not permitted on any Sturgeon County Trail at this time.

Are there hours that the trails are open to the public?

Most trails are open for use at any time. The Red Ribbon Trail, which is located in Cardiff Park is subject to Cardiff Park hours. These hours are as follows: Monday through Sunday, 5:00a.m. – 11:00p.m.

I forgot my dog bags, can I find dog bags or dog bag disposal options along the trails?

There are dog bags and receptacles on multiple Sturgeon County trails. The bags can be found on the Sturgeon County trail signs.  

How can I report an issue or concern?

Do all the trails have identified parking areas? Where can I find the parking access?

Lamoureux Trail, Fort Augustus Trail, Red Ribbon Trail and Bellerose Trail all have identified parking areas that can be found on the interactive map. The remainder of the trails rely on street parking for access.

How do I book amenities at Cardiff Park?

Cardiff Park offers opportunities for various recreational uses including bookable day-use sheltered picnic sites, soccer fields and baseball diamonds.

Land Acknowledgement

Sturgeon County acknowledges that these trails are on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional meeting ground for many Indigenous peoples, and in particular the Michel Band and our neighbours, Alexander First Nation. We also recognize the Métis and Inuit whose footsteps mark these lands and share a deep-rooted history.
