Dundee Bell Street Active Travel Routes
A public conversation about future connections to the Bell Street Sustainable Transport Hub
Introduction
Dundee City Council (DCC) have received £14 million from the Levelling Up Fund to transform the Bell Street Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP) to a Sustainable Transport Hub (STH) over the next 3 years.
The ground floor of the hub is proposed to be a car free area for pedestrians and cyclists and house bike storage for residents, businesses, students, commuters and visitors to the city centre.
As part of the transformation DCC have commissioned Stantec to review and improve the active travel routes connecting to the STH. The project is funded through Places for Everyone , an active travel infrastructure programme backed by the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans, and is currently at Stages 0-2 (concept design).
Through this project, DCC seeks to:
- Connect the wider active travel network to the STH
- Address the issue of severance caused to the north by the Marketgait ring-road
- Make the city centre more accessible by active modes
The active travel infrastructure and route designs developed will aim to encourage and enable the public to choose active and sustainable travel options more often – by providing safe and (where possible) segregated routes for people walking, cycling and wheeling.
Project area
The project focuses on the proposed Sustainable Transport Hub, which will be located adjacent to the Marketgait ring-road (A991) to the north-west of the city centre.
This location presents a key opportunity to provide active travel connections across the inner ring-road to the north and onwards towards the city centre and the waterfront, among other strategically important locations and planned developments, including the bus and rail stations and the Eden project.
Simultaneous projects
Due to the multi-faceted nature of the Sustainable Transport Hub (STH) redevelopment, collaboration is key to the success of the active travel routes.
The active travel route designs must align with:
- Public Realm around the STH
- Internal Hub design
- City Centre Strategic Investment Plan
- Abertay University Campus Masterplan
- Lochee Road Active Freeway
- Harefield-Strathmore-Dens Road Active Freeway
- Perth Road Active Freeway
- Pitkerro Road Active Freeway
- Arbroath Road Active Freeway
Dundee's Active Travel Network
For context of how this project fits into Dundee's city wide proposed active travel network see the maps below.
The first map shows how the proposed Dundee Active Freeways (and other future routes under development) connect to the Bell Street Active Travel Routes.
The map below shows the wider proposed network and was developed by Dundee City Council as part of the draft Sustainable Transport Delivery Plan 2024-2034 .
Timeline
The project commenced in August 2023 and since then the project team has conducted a baseline analysis and options appraisal, developed preliminary visualisations, and discussed early ideas with key stakeholders.
Initial concepts have now been developed, based on feedback from the recent stakeholder engagement and we would like to hear your thoughts!
The online survey will run for 7 weeks, from Tuesday, 21st November to Tuesday, 9th January.
A public drop-in session will be held in the McManus Galleries , Learning Studio on Wednesday, 13th December (12pm to 7pm).
Another round of dedicated stakeholder workshops will also be held (by invitation only).
Visualisations
The visualisations below show six key locations within the project area and their proposed active travel route connections and infrastructure around the Bell Street Sustainable Transport Hub. These road layouts will be rolled out over the rest of the project area depending on the movement function of each street. We are looking for your feedback on these visualisations in the Survey tab .
