The Hunter has localised the targets and chosen to report against the following primary indicators* to determine our progress:

2.1.1 Prevalence of undernourishment
Dietary intake of children

Trends
Between the years 2003-2020, percentage of children population consuming recommended daily intake of fruits remain above 50% in HNEH District and NSW. Which is significantly higher than the values for recommended vegetable intake that ranged between 11 to 4% for the same time period.
There also appears to be a gradual decline since 2014 for both fruits and vegetables recommended daily intake by children of HNEH district and overall NSW.

Dietary intake of adults

Trends
There is a gradual decline in recommended daily servings of fruits by adults since 2014, dropping to 40%. Similar pattern is followed by the vegetable intake.
Recommended consumption of fruits is significantly higher at a maximum value of 57% in 2009 as compared to vegetable recommended consumption which had a maximum value of 11% in 2014.

Percentage population who are obese or overweight

Trends
For NSW, data shows a steady increase in the obesity/overweight indicators since 2012. For HNEH District, this indicator shows rise and dips every year since 2007, with the latest value being 66% in 2021, a minor drop from 68% in 2020.
For majority of years between between 2007 to 2021, the overweight indicators were approximately 10% higher as compared to obesity indicators for population living in HNEH District and NSW.

Trend
Data shows a steady increase in the percentage of people experiencing food insecurity in Australia since 2017.
