The Hunter has localised the targets and chosen to report against the following primary indicators* to determine our progress:

  • 15.1.1 Land Area Categories
    • Percentage of land area by category
  • 15.1.2 Percentage of protected area
    • Protected land as a percentage of total area
    • Protected land area in square kilometers
    • Woody vegetation land cleared
  • 15.5.1 Threatened species
    • Number of threatened species (by threatened status) in NSW

* Data provided was last updated in 2023. It is anticipated that the data sets will be updated once every 2 years.

15.1.1 Land Area Categories

Percentage of land area by category

Filters at the top of the visual can be used to interact with the graphs.

Trend

Native forests and plantation forests contribute the highest proportion of vegetation area across all Hunter LGAs.

Things to note

Includes both woodland and non-woodland forest.

15.1.2 Protected area

Protected land as a percentage of total area

Filters at the top of the visual can be used to interact with the graphs.

Trend

There is an increase in the trend of % protected land across Hunter LGAs, NSW and Australia.

Things to note

The figures only include woodland area. To display accurate figures, a preserved land classification needs to be selected.

Protected land - total area in square kilometers

Filters at the top of the visual can be used to interact with the graphs.

Trend

There is an increase in the trend of area of protected land across Hunter LGAs, NSW and Australia.

Things to note

The figures only include woodland area. To display accurate figures, a protected land classification needs to be selected.

Woody vegetation land cleared

Filters at the top of the visual can be used to interact with the graphs.

Trend

The Hunter Region Total shows a steady decline in the trend of woody vegetation land cleared since 2016.

Things to note

To display accurate figures, a land clearing cause needs to be selected.

15.5.1 Threatened species

Number of threatened species (by threatened status) in NSW

Filters at the top of the visual can be used to interact with the graphs.

Trend

Total number of endangered/ vulnerable species are on the rise since 2002.

Things to note

[Some phrasing required to denote - Increased numbers of threatened aquatic species may be the result of higher rates of monitoring, and not a true increase in the number of endangered species.] Vulnerable species data may include crossover of aquatic/marine endangered species along with land species.
