The Hunter has localised the targets and chosen to report against the following primary indicators* to determine our progress:

  • 16.1.1 Victims of violent crime (per 100,000 people)
    • Women and men victims of violent crime (per 100,000 women)
    • First Nations and Non-First Nations victims of violent crime (per 100,000 men)
  • 16.2.3 Victims of sexual violence (per 100,000 people)
    • Women and men victims of sexual violence (per 100,000 people)
    • First Nations and Non-First Nations victims of sexual violence (per 100,000 people)
  • 16.3.2 People on remand as percentage of prison population
    • Percentage of people on remand as a proportion of the prison population in NSW
  • 16.4.1 Crime rates

16.1.1 Victims of violent crime (per 100,000 people)

Trend

The Hunter Region Total trend of reported criminal violence is on the rise since 2019 for women and for men, there is declining trend since 2018. For NSW, this trend shows a decline since 2019.

First Nations and Non-First Nations victims of violent crime (per 100,00 people)

Trend

The Hunter Region Total trend of reported criminal violence is on a decline since 2018 for both First Nations and Non-First Nations people. For NSW, there is a steady decline since 2016 for both categories.

16.2.3 Victims of sexual violence (per 100,000 people)

Trend

The Hunter Region Total as well as for NSW, the sexual violence trend was on an increase from 2018 to 2020, with a slight decline in 2021, for both men and women. Incidents of sexual violence against women has been higher than against men across all Hunter LGAs.

First Nations and Non-First Nations victims of sexual violence (per 100,000 people)

Trend

The Hunter Region Total, the sexual violence trend was highest in 2020 for Non-First Nations, whereas it was highest in 2019 for First Nations. For Overall NSW, this trend is on a decline since 2019. Incidents of sexual violence against Non-First Nations has been higher than against First-Nations across all Hunter LGAs.

16.3.2 People on remand as percentage of prison population

Trend

Of the total prison population overall NSW, about 30% to 40% has been on remand each year since 2013.

Things to note

Alleged offenders on remand are held in custody before and during their trial (on criminal charges) by order of a court.

16.4.1 Crime rates

Trend

For Crime against Justice Procedures category, the Hunter Region Total and NSW trend is at an increase since 2020. For all other categories of crime Hunter Region Total trend and NSW is at a decline. The Other category shows a sudden spike in 2021.

16.5.1 Corruption

Trend

There is a general pattern of increase in the number of complaints over the years, with some dips in between.
